We did the loop which took us from Dales campground to circular pool, then walked in the gorge to fortescue falls and fern pool, then up the staircase and along the rim back to the campground and that was nice and more scenic then just the rim trail

The longer hike in Dales Gorge leads you to Circular Pool and takes roughly an hour each way.
